According to reports from the Spanish media, Tottenham have had a £22m bid for Matteo Kovacic turned down this week, but they could return with an improved bid later on this summer if they have serious interest in signing the Real Madrid star.

Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos has recently joined the Spanish giants, and this could tempt Madrid to cash in on Kovacic with sufficient backup already in the squad. Furthermore, with Madrid keen to sign young teenage star Kylian Mbappe, they will be keen to raise funds.

At 23 years of age, Kovacic will be keen to get regular playing time at such a crucial stage in his career. Let’s face it, Kovacic will find it easier to muscle his way into the team at Spurs than he would with the Champions League winners.

The Croatian made 27 appearances for Real Madrid in La Liga last season, scoring once and providing three assists, and would certainly challenge the likes of Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele for a spot in the middle of the park.
