Grades A-E: How Have Tottenham’s Summer Signings Fared So Far This Season?

Vincent Janssen- C+

Another piece of fairly early business from Spurs, but unfortunately, Janssen has not brought the same quality this season as Victor Wanyama has. The Dutchman has offered a terrific work rate since he came through the door at White Hart Lane, but has failed to score a goal from open play thus far, netting three times from the penalty spot.

The main feature of Janssen’s play is holding the ball up and looking to lay the ball off to teammates. He has done this part well, and is one of the best hold up players I have ever seen. However, he needs to bring more to the team to be worth the £17m investment.

I would like to see Janssen to continue to hold up the ball the way that he does, but he should always look to spin off the defender and make a run in behind the defence after laying the ball off. We have not seen much of Janssen’s ability in front of goal, but from his time at AZ Alkmaar, it looks pretty good.

The effort Janssen has put in has been first class, and you have to give him credit for that. However, his goalscoring record needs to improve, and I have given him a C+ for that exact reason.
