Tottenham complete surprise loan deal for £31.5m man

It had been widely reported that Tottenham’s move for Cristian Romero would be a permanent one.

But on confirming the transfer, Atalanta appeared to reveal the structure of the deal is actually a loan. Tottenham did not reveal the length of the contract or structure of the deal when they confirmed the transfer on Friday.

Atalanta though were willing to confirm the details of the deal saying: “Atalanta B.C. announce that the player Cristian Romero has joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan, with an option to make the move permanent.” on their official website

It’s not clear what value has been placed upon that option – but I guess it’s a positive that Spurs have not yet committed fully to paying a large fee for the defender who is valued at £31.5million on transfermarkt

Interestingly Sky Sports had confirmed the deal as a £42million transfer, potentially rising to £47million depending on bonuses.

This has proven to be incorrect on Atalanta’s official announcement, however, the reported amounts may bear a resemblance to the amount placed on the option to buy.

Spurs will be delighted to have signed off the deal for Romero, and now they need to move on to focus on other improvements and sorting the problematic Harry Kane scenario.
