Let’s get this straight. Spurs are NOT Barcelona. Despite their best efforts to play the ball out from the back in that fashion, Spurs are not Barcelona. We saw what problems Manchester City had with this tactic when pressed high by an in-form Spurs team at White Hart Lane, and it was not pretty from a City point of view.
Despite this, Spurs continue to play the ball out from the back, at times, putting themselves under a huge amount of pressure. This tactic caused huge problems on Wednesday night, Spurs can count themselves lucky that they didn’t concede at least two more goals.
The tactic clearly causes more problems than it does good, and Spurs need to learn when to just get rid of the ball. If the Spurs defence gets caught on the ball like they did in midweek, then the Arsenal attack will not pass up the kind of opportunities that Leverkusen on Wednesday night.
