Despite Tottenham’s average and inconsistent start to the Premier League season, head coach Mauricio Pochettino remains very confident that his side can still claim a Champions League spot come the end of the campaign. Speaking before the game against Swansea, Spurs sat 10th in the table. Things have improved since the interview, Tottenham are now seventh and just four points off a Champions League place.

‘It is good that we stopped playing in the Europa League because it is very difficult to manage the games.

‘Now, I think all of our opponents in the next two or three months will maybe play in the same condition. This is important, it is very important.

After explaining that the period where there is no European football is fairer than other parts of the season, Pochettino said that things are going well at the moment and the side need to kick-on in this very, very busy Christmas period that is to come.

‘I believe that is possible because so far, so good.

‘I think that the team arrive in a very condition, physically and mentally. They are ready to compete now in this very, very busy period.

‘It is important to arrive with all the players fit and ready to compete because maybe you play now a lot of games and you need the whole squad.

‘Yes, we are very close but we need to be consistent. It is true.’

Tottenham have a big game to come at White Hart Lane on Wednesday when in-form Newcastle come to London off the back of an impressive victory over Chelsea, who were unbeaten before that match. This could be Spurs’ best chance of winning a trophy this season.
