With Kyle Walker leaving to join Manchester City for £50million earlier this month, there has been lots of speculation as to who Tottenham will sign as a replacement. The club have been very quiet in the transfer window so far, but surely armed with so much money, they would go and invest in a replacement.. no?
Well some fans are starting to think that Kieran Trippier could be the internal replacement. The 26-year-old thrived towards the end of the season and with the news that he has signed a new 5-year contract, it does look possible that Pochettino is showing his faith in the player and rewarding him for his fine form towards the end of the season.
But surely Pochettino will at least want to sign a player to offer some competition to Trippier. Nice full back Ricardo Pereira has been the most strongly linked lately, with the Portuguese defender appearing to be priced relatively modestly at £22million.
The young right back has been very impressive for Nice and helped them in their title challenge last season. He’s been capped twice for Portugal’s senior side, but after his impressive campaign in Ligue 1 he is expected to become a regular in the national team.
But despite these links, other reports have suggested that Tottenham are not pursuing Pereira, this just adds more fuel to the fire that suggests Spurs are looking to simply promote Trippier as Walker’s replacement.
On signing the new deal, Trippier said:
“I’m delighted with the news with my new deal. It’s a great achievement for myself and I’m just delighted to get it signed,” Trippier told the club’s website.
“I always believed that I can play at the top level and like I say I’ve been working hard, even when I’ve not been playing I’ve been keeping my head down and games and been working hard for my opportunities.
