With Spurs just one point off the top four and ten points off league leaders Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to make signings in January, allowing his side to really push on in the second half of this high competitive Premier League season. Here are three signings he could look to make in the New Year.
1) Max Meyer
Reports have linked Tottenham with a move for Schalke star Max Meyer for a number of transfer windows, and it is no surprise to see the same rumours are appearing to surface once again ahead of the January transfer window. It is Sport Bild, a German publication that are now linking Spurs with a move for the German international.
Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs were keen to get a deal over the line in the summer for Meyer, but since an agreement hasn’t been reached, the North Londoners are interested in trying to agree a deal in the New Year. However, the report from Sport Bild suggests that Schalke will not accept any bids under £30m.
Schalke have struggled in the Bundesliga this season, and Meyer hasn’t hit the heights of previous seasons during Schalke’s struggles. Making eleven appearances this term, the German hasn’t scored a single goal, and has provided just one assist. In addition to this, Mayer has been one key passes per game, eleven in total in the league.
Comparing that to Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen, those figures look poor. The Dane has managed to complete 38 key passes, contributing four assists as well as scoring five league goals. Looking at those stats, the £30m Spurs will have to pay does not look like a wise investment to me.
