Pochettino Warns Kaboul About Starting Place

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has warned Spurs captain Younes Kaboul that being captain of the team does not at all guarantee a starting place in his team each week.

It is clear that Younes has fallen out of favour in the Premier League, and this doesn’t look like this is going to change anytime soon after Jan Vertonghen said that playing with a regular partner, Federcio Fazio, has helped to provide some stability to the defence.

The centre-back didn’t do himself any favours a couple of weeks ago when he had his chance to impress head coach Mauricio Pochettino in Turkey against Besiktas. However, he didn’t take his chance, making a mistake that led to the winning goal.

Pochettino has said that being a captain requires who to be a leader, not only out on the pitch, but off it too. However, if Kaboul doesn’t gets given playing time soon, he may decide that the time is right to move away.

“To be captain means you are a leader, but just because you are captain it doesn’t mean you are sure of a place in the starting XI. It’s a football decision. There is no other explanation.

“When you decide to pick the team, you don’t think about who the captain is. It’s my job to pick the players and that will always be my decision.”
