Report: Spurs Outcast Attracting A Lot Of Interest Ahead Of January Transfer Window- Is A Move Away Realistic?

Spurs centre-back Kevin Wimmer is attracting lots of interest from lots of clubs ahead of the January transfer window, with three clubs set to battle it out for the Austrian’s services. However, whether any moves actually materialises will be the decision of Tottenham, according to Wimmer’s agent.

The Evening Standard claim that the three clubs interested in Wimmer are German giants Borussia Dortmund and Wolfsburg, while Southampton are also monitoring the centre-back’s situation at Spurs. Wimmer’s agent Jurgen Werner claims there are no plans as yet in terms of a move away in January, and the decision will be that of the club regarding Wimmer’s future.

Wimmer will have known coming into this season that he was neither first choice nor second choice centre-backs due to the presence of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen. However, Wimmer have been a little disheartened to not see himself enjoy an extended run in the starting line-up as a result of Alderweireld’s knee injury.

Mauricio Pochettino chose Eric Dier to fill the void at the heart of the Spurs defence alongside Jan Vertonghen, rather than Wimmer, although we did see the Austrian form a part of a back three against Arsenal and fill in at left-back at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea. Also, in the most recent back three deployed by Pochettino against Hull at White Hart Lane, Eric Dier was preferred to Kevin Wimmer.

This may have surprised Wimmer a little after he filled in so well last season when a place in the side became available due to injuries, and may be looking for more playing time, having only featured in the games against Arsenal, Chelsea and in the EFL Cup and one Champions League fixture.

Is a move away for Wimmer realistic?

It remains to be seen whether Pochettino wants to use a back three on a regular basis, and if the Argentine was to do this and injuries were to have an impact on the squad, then Wimmer of course would be needed. However, the argument remains that he is arguably the fourth-choice centre-back at the club, and below him is Cameron Carter-Vickers, do Spurs need five centre-backs?

If we think back to earlier on this season, with Wimmer signing a new deal with Spurs, would the club be willing to cash in so early on into his contract extension. Surely the club would wait until the summer. Although there is a lot of interest in the centre-back if these reports are correct, I do not think we will see Wimmer move away from Spurs in the January transfer window.
