Tottenham urged to complete deal for this world class defender

Whilst Tottenham have been widely linked with a move for Marcel Sabitzer of RB Leipzig this summer, former Tottenham man Darren Bent has urged the club to invest in one of Sabitzer’s teammates.

With Jan Vertonghen leaving the club this summer, Spurs are yet to replace the Belgian international, and their defence certainly needs some attention.

Bent thinks that Spurs should focus their attention and budget on French defender Dayot Upamecano.

Talking on the Sabitzer to Spurs rumours, Bent told talkSPORT: “I do believe that people are looking at the wrong RB Leipzig player because we have spoken about their centre-half [Upamecano]. What a performance he put on the other night.”

Upamecano is widely regarded as being fairly experienced for his age and offers a commanding assured presence in defence. His performances for RB Leipzig in the latter stages of the Champions League have only helped further raise his reputation.

We brought you the news back in December 2019 that Spurs were rivalling Arsenal in the pursuit of Upamecano. Since then, the defender has signed a new deal, but only a relatively short term extension, taking his contract to 2023 (it was due to expire in 2021).

The length of that extension to me highlights how the club are aiming to protect the players value rather than the player necessarily committing his long term future to the club.

If Tottenham made a big enough bid to both Leipzig and the player, then it would certainly test both of their resolves.
