UCL Player Ratings: Tottenham 1-2 Monaco

In front of a record crowd at Wembley, Spurs were unable to recover from a slow, sluggish start that saw then 0-2 down in just over 30 minutes. Despite Toby Alderweireld pulling a goal back for Spurs just before half-time, goals from Bernado Silva and Thomas Lemar were enough for Monaco to get their Champions League campaign off to a winning start. Here are the Spurs player ratings.

Hugo Lloris- 5

Apart from the two goals, the Frenchman didn’t really have too much to do at all. I thought he was unlucky with the two goals, especially the first, nothing he could do about the strike from Bernado Silva

Kyle Walker- 6

Looked a threat going forward for a large portion of the night, bombing down that right-hand side as he so often does well. However, I feel his final ball or cross could have been better at times.

Toby Alderwireld- 5

Was solid enough, but despite the well-taken goal, not quite up to his usual standards to be honest. He gave the ball away in the second half when under no pressure at all with a poor touch, fortunately the resulting attack came to nothing worth mentioning.

Jan Vertonghen- 5

Really shouldn’t have backed off Bernado Silva and let him run as he did, if he defends a little more aggressively in that sitiatuion and puts a foot in then Wednesday evening might have been a different story altogether.

Ben Davies- 5

Would certainly like to see Davies become more of an attacking threat and be a little more like Danny Rose, but defensively I think his performance was just about good enough.

Eric Dier- 5

Didn’t really look himself on Wedensday night under the Wembley lights, but after a dodgy and nervy first half performance, the defensive midfielder picked his game up a but in the second period before he was replaced by Moussa Sissoko.

Dele Alli- 6

Alli was deployed in a deeper role than usual in the first half, and the substitution of Son for Dembele at the break allowed him to push forward in the second half. He worked hard in the deeper role and you cannot fault his work rate, but I feel the youngster is at his best playing just behind the striker.
