Was Daniel Levy Right Not To Sign A Striker On Deadline Day?

As the January transfer went on, it became apparent that Spurs were not going to make any mid-season additions to the squad, and this was confirmed as transfer deadline day on February 2nd came and went. Fans particularly wished for Tottenham to sign a striker during the window, but was this the right thing for Daniel Levy to do?

Firstly, there would be quite a few positives to adding a new striker to the squad, and the fact that we would presumably become less reliant on Harry Kane would be naming just one. Ever since his introduction to the first team in the Europa League by Mauricio Pochettino, Kane has taken his chance with open arms, scoring twenty goals this season, more than any striker in the Premier League, one ahead of Sergio Aguero.

Signing a new striker would allow Mauricio Pochettino to field a confident 4-4-2 side. As we have seen this season, Soldado has been short of confidence, and we maybe haven’t used the 4-4-2 formation to full effect yet this term.

We have seen him and Christian Eriksen bring in a large majority of Spurs’ goals, and should the young striker sustain an injury, we would have back-up. Even of our new striker wasn’t intended for the Premier League squad, his cup starting place would surly be guaranteed, and with Roberto Soldado and Emmanuel Adebayor not producing performances up to scratch, it would be the logical thing to do, wouldn’t it? Or would it?

As well as the positives to signing a new striker, there are a couple of negatives. For example, what happens to the two strikers on the outskirts of the first team. Well, both would suffer a huge loss in confidence for a start, Roberto Soldado in particular, and with four strikers at the club, it would be almost impossible for Mauricio Pochettino to keep everybody happy. Or am I being ridiculous, that’s football right? Yes, that is football, but for me, there is a lot of talent at this football club in terms of strikers. Okay, some of that may not have been showcased yet, but it is there for sure. And should we suffer some kind of injury crisis, we are left with a mentally-destroyed Roberto Soldado, and an unreliable Emmanuel Adebayor.

Taking everything into account, I think that Tottenham should make a summer move for a striker, but first they must offload either Roberto Soldado or Emmanuel Adebayor.
