Player Ratings: Watford 1-4 Spurs- Lilywhites Run Riot At Vicarage Road

Spurs started as they mean to go on in 2017 with a thumping 4-1 win over Watford on New Year’s Day. A Harry Kane brace and a Dele Alli double helped Spurs on their way to victory in a contest that was over by half-time. Here are the player ratings from the 4-1 win.

Hugo Lloris- 7

Hardly had a save to make all game. He will be disappointed not to keep the clean sheet, but in the end it has no significance at all.

Eric Dier- 7

It was once again a back three deployed by Mauricio Pochettino, and I thought Eric Dier had a good game. Not only was his defending good, but he looked to pose a threat going forward, successful or not.

Toby Alderweireld- 7

A welcome return back into the side for Toby Alderweireld. He had a solid game and managed to keep the threat posed by Deeney and Ighalo to a minimum.

Kevin Wimmer- 7

Wimmer slotted into the side well at Vicarage Road. He is a good squad player for Spurs, and on his day is a good defender. I think Spurs should keep hold of him during January and for the rest of the season.

Kieran Trippier- 9

Outstanding. Trippier had an amazing game in the absence of the suspended Kyle Walker. He created two chances, and created two goals as a result. A excellent performance from the 26-year-old, who should be given more chances in the first team.

Danny Rose- 7

Didn’t quite hit the heights of previous games, but still looked solid. He looked a little tired, and it was a smart move to replace him with Ben Davies ahead of the crunch clash with Chelsea on Wednesday night.

‘Should Start More Often’ Spurs Fans Heap Praise Onto This Man Following Watford Thrashing

Spurs got the New Year off to the best possible start with a 4-1 win over struggling Watford. The win lifts Mauricio Pochettino’s side into the top four going into the next round of fixtures.

Spurs dominated the game from the start, and you could sense a goal was coming when Dele Alli crashed a magnificent effort off the bar. In fact, the opener came just 24 seconds later. Kieran Trippier slid a lovely ball through to Harry Kane, who finished at the near post beyond Gomes.

A second goal was to follow soon after. Trippier was the creator once again as he whipped a great cross into the box. Kane was first to it between two Watford defenders to fire Spurs two goals to the good.

Younes Kaboul would have been keen to impress former manager Mauricio Pochettino on his visit to Vicarage Road following his comments about the Argentine boss in the week, but it was his error that led to the third goal just before half-time. Kaboul should have cleared a second ball, but slipped and gave the chance to Dele Alli, who made no mistake in tucking the ball into the back of the net.

The Englishman added his second just after the break. Harry Kane played the ball through to Alli, who took a touch before sliding the ball under Gomes. Tottenham took their foot off the gas slightly, and Watford scored a conciliation goal in stoppage time as Kaboul bundled the ball into the net.

Kieran Trippier put in a highly impressive performance for Spurs, playing in a right wing-back role in the absence of Kyle Walker. The 26-year-old created two chances, both turning into goals, won 75% of his tackles and put 4 crosses into the box. Here is how Spurs fans reacted to Trippier’s fantastic display.

Spurs Set To Face Competition For Premier League Striker

Tottenham are interested in signing Watford striker Troy Deeney reports from The Sun last week claimed, but The Telegraph suggest that they will have to fight off competition from the Premier League champions Leicester City if they are to sign their summer target.

The Telegraph claim that Leicester are lining up a bid for the Tottenham target in order to bolster their attacking options ahead of their Premier League title defence, which begins in August.

Leicester could be about to lose their star man Jamie Vardy to Spurs’ North London rivals Arsenal, who reportedly have offered the Englishman a contract that will see him earn in excess of £100,000 per week. However, The Telegraph suggest that Leicester will make a move for Deeney, regardless of whether Vardy moves to Arsenal or not.

Mauricio Pochettino on the other hand will be looking to strengthen his options this summer to provide support for Harry Kane up front, with Clinton N’Jie far from providing anywhere near enough goals in an injury-hit season for the Cameroon international.

Spurs of course will be looking to improve squad depth as they be playing in the Champions League after a third placed finish last term.

It is thought that it will take a bid of £15m upwards to tempt Watford into accepting an offer for the striker who struck thirteen times last season for the Hornets.

The striker, standing at six-feet tall, would be a big asset for Spurs, should they be successful in their pursuit for the 27-year-old. Not only does he having a good goal scoring record at Watford and at Walsall, his previous club, but he also has experience of the Premier League on his side. This means that splashing out £15m upwards on the striker would not be as bigger risk as it would be splashing the cash on somebody from overseas, who is not going to be a guaranteed hit in the Premier League, which previous signings have suggested.

Spurs will be looking to challenge once again for the Premier League title, after falling short last season, and Troy Deeney would give Mauricio Pochettino a much needed alternative to Harry Kane if the Golden Boot winner was to come off the boil or be hit with injury.

Premier League New Boys Keen On Spurs Duo

Yesterday, Foot Mercato reported that Etienne Capoue would complete his move to Watford today, but the Daily Mail have brought us back down to earth today, stating that Watford are still looking to agree a deal with Spurs for Capoue and one other midfielder.

The Daily Mail claim that Watford are also looking to seal a deal for Benjamin Stambouli, who just Capoue, has been limited to few first team minutes this year, after falling down the midfield pecking order.

Daniel Levy and Mauricio Pochettino are in agreement that Spurs are in need of a summer sale, and it has been reported that both Etienne Capoue and Benjamin Stambouli are in the firing line.

The Spurs midfield duo are both keen to prove themselves in the Premier League, and both see a move to Watford as an ideal opportunity to do exactly that. Tottenham have reportedly accepted a £10m double offer for the pair, and talks regarding personal terms are still ongoing claim the Mail. Will Watford sign the Spurs pair?

Sale Of Spurs Midfielder Edges Closer, Deal Could Be Completed Tomorrow

Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue could complete a move to Premier League new-boys Watford as early as tomorrow, should everything go to plan, say French source Foot Mercato.

Foot Mercato seem adamant that the deal will be completed on Friday, with a medical already been completed by the midfielder and we are just waiting for the announcements from both clubs.

The midfielder joined as a part of the ‘summer seven’ that arrived in 2013, and could be the second of that seven to leave this week following Paulinho’s departure from White Hart Lane.

Capoue has previously been linked with a move to Watford by English papers, but the French papers now seem certain that the move will go ahead, and Foot Mercato claim that Spurs will receive nine million euros from the transfer.

The holding player has struggled to break back into the first team after being dropped by manager Mauricio Pochettino towards the tail end of last year, and is now reportedly deemed surplus to requirements at Spurs, paving the way for his reported move to Watford.

Paulinho Linked With Move To Premier League Club

According to Italian sources Sky Italia, Premier League new-boys Watford are set to make a move for Spurs Brazilian midfielder Paulinho, who has struggled to settle in at White Hart Lane since his £17m move in 2013.

Tottenham have given the midfielder more than enough time to adapt to English football, and are set to sell the Brazilian in a summer exodus along with the likes of Roberto Soldado and Vlad Chiriches.

The midfield partnership of Ryan Mason and Nabil Bentaleb has been hard to break into, and fellow midfielders such as Paulinho and Benjamin Stambouli have been given limited first team minutes.

Watford are preparing for a Premier League season where their main objective will be to avoid relegation, and they hope that Paulinho will boost their chances of staying in the Premier League.

The Hornets have reportedly contacted Spurs over a move for the 26-year-old and will be hoping to sign the midfielder, and will get more first team opportunities, but whether he will be open to a move to Watford remains to be seen.

Spurs Defender Could Join Newly-Promoted Premier League Side

The Sun claim that Watford are interested in signing out-of-favour Tottenham centre-back Younes Kaboul in the summer transfer window.

The defender is slowly falling down the pecking order at Spurs, and it looks like the 29-year-old has just about reached rock bottom in terms of selection for a first team spot.

As a result, it has been reported that Kaboul is looking for a way out of the club in the summer, but isn’t keen on a move away from the Premier League.

Spurs rate the centre-back at around £4m, a transfer fee that Watford could easily afford after winning promotion to the Premier League, narrowly missing out on the Championship title on the final day of the season.

Kaboul has made just eleven appearances for the North London club this season, and Mauricio Pochettino has not selected the 29-year-old since January, and his last league appearance came in November last night.
