Tottenham look like they could be dipping into the transfer market in January if the latest rumours are anything to go by – but are they targeting the wrong player?

According to TalkSport, who cite German publication SportBILD as their source, Tottenham have reignited their interest in Schalke midfielder Max Meyer.

The versatile, attack-minded midfielder is just 21 years old and already has 4 caps for Germany. He is rated extremely highly by his peers and in Germany. Despite his young age, he has already played more than 100 games for Schalke, a phenomenal achievement in itself. He has been at the club as a youth player since 2009 and made his senior debut in 2013, he hasn’t looked back and has been a regular in the team since then. He wears the number 7 shirt and Schalke very much deem him indispensable. TalkSport suggest that the German club would want £30million-£40million to part with him, but I’m not even sure that would be enough. Considering the kind of money that is going around these days, Schalke are unlikely to part with their golden boy for less than £50million in my opinion, unless they are in some kind of financial difficulty.

With that in mind, would Tottenham not be better placed trying to scupper PSG’s/Liverpool’s/Arsenal’s deal for Julian Draxler? The German playmaker is unhappy at Wolfsburg and the German club have said he can go, it is thought they are demanding around £35million for his signature. Aged 23, Draxler is still a work in progress, but at his best he is a top quality player and if he could realise his potential he would be considered amongst the very best.

Standing at 6ft 2′ but with pace and agility to match many shorter more natural dribblers, Draxler combines a rare mix of qualities to make him a really useful midfielder for any team. With 27 caps for Germany, he is building up a wealth of experience. Considering he’d cost less than Meyer and is actually available, should Tottenham not be trying to sign him?

Tottenham are crying out for some creativity and inspiration in the final third. I think Draxler is the perfect player to try and solve those problems.

What do you think? Are Tottenham wasting their time in their pursuit of Meyer, or is he worth it? Comment below with your thoughts.
