The whole Spurs squad will be on a high following that dramatic win over London rivals West Ham on Saturday, and need to take that confidence into a must-win Champions League fixture against Monaco on Tuesday night.
Spurs have picked up just four points from four group stage matches so far, and could be eliminated if they fail to win in Monaco. Tottenham will be without Toby Alderweireld, Erik Lamela and Ben Davies for this crucial clash. Taking those injuries into account, here is how Spurs should lineup if they are to beat Monaco.
GK: Hugo Lloris
The Frenchman has been key to much of Spurs’ success this season, and if it was not for some of the saves Lloris has made, Spurs could be out of the Champions League already after just four matches.
CB: Eric Dier
The key to success in Monaco will be a back three. Dier has formed a good partnership with Vertonghen whilst Alderweireld has been out, and I expect the England inernational will play alongside the Belgian once again here.
CB: Jan Vertonghen
Vertonghen has really stepped up and performed since Alderweireld’s injury, and he had an excellent game against West Ham. He made crucial tackles at crucial times and he will key to defensive success here.
CB: Kevin Wimmer
To be honest, I don’t think that Wimmer played particularly badly against Arsenal in his first league start. He had a solid game, but was put in a really unfortunate and awkward situation with the ball in from Ozil, which was a really difficult cross to deal with. We should have confidence in him playing well here.
RWB: Kyle Walker
With there being little width further up the pitch, it will be up to the full-backs, Kyle Walker and Danny Rose to provide the width in attack. They did this really well against Arsenal, and both caused problems at the Emirates. There should also be a lot of defending to do in Monaco, and Walker and Rose are more than capable of doing this.
LWB: Danny Rose
After picking up a yellow card at the weekend, Rose will miss the crunch clash with Chelsea on Saturday, and with Ben Davies ruled out of this one, Rose will start here. He put in another excellent display against West Ham, and should play the same role as Walker, bombing up and down his left-hand side.
