Jan Vertonghen is set to sign a new contract at Spurs, extending his stay at White Hart Lane, but Spurs and Daniel Levy face a much tougher task in agreeing new contracts for star duo Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.
Central-defender Vertonghen is currently paid £60,000-per-week on his current contract, which is due to expire in 2018. However, it is understood that the Belgian will receive a significant pay rise after a string of impressive performance, stretching back to last season.
Spurs will be delighted that Vertonghen is ready to commit his future to the club, but wages are what is stopping Lloris and Kane signing new deals in North London. Reports claim that Daniel Levy is unwilling to pay anybody at the club over 100,000-per-week, with Vertonghen’s wages expected to be just below this figure.
This has not proved to be a problem when negotiating new contracts with Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker and Dele Alli, but Daniel Levy miles away from successfully negotiating new contracts with Kane and Lloris as the Chairman refuses to pay anybody at the club a six-figure salary.
However, we heard that Spurs are fairly relaxed about the future of Harry Kane, and are confident that with time he will put pen to paper. But it has come to the surface that an agreement to keep Lloris beyond his current contract that expires in 2019 is much further away.
Vertonghen has been a key part of the Spurs defence this season, and has really stepped up since the knee injury of Toby Alderweireld one month ago. He and his fellow Belgian built up a special partnership at the heart of the Spurs defence, boasting one of the best defensive records in the Premier League last season.
This impressive form has continued into the new season, with Spurs conceding just six times in the Premier League this term. Spurs’ unbeaten success this season is largely down the defence, and it is good to see Daniel Levy recognising this, and taking action in order to keep Vertonghen at the club beyond his current deal.
