Daniel Levy has maintained that he was only back his staff, and he was not to blame for the blowing of the Gareth Bale money that the club received in the summer of 2013.

Some players bought with that money have been a success, with Christian Erisken and Nacer Chadli standing out from the rest of the ‘summer seven’.

However, the likes of Paulinho, Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado just haven’t performed for the Lilywhites’, despite costing a total of £77m for the three of them.

The Tottenham chairman has said that Franco Baldini and Andre Villas-Boas are to blame for the waste of the money, although the former Spurs boss claims that he had no say in what players came in at the club.

“The chairman proposed a challenge to increase Tottenham’s competitive level, but…we didn’t get any of the targets I had identified, such as João Moutinho, Willian, Oscar or Leandro Damião.

“These were promises that were not kept. I had a group of players I had not chosen. In two years I lost [Rafael] Van der Vaart, [Luka] Modric, Bale, and all the promises made were unfulfilled.”
