February: A Season-Defining Month For Tottenham

Spurs have come so far under Mauricio Pochettino, and sit very nicely in sixth position in the Premier League, and are still in with a chance of finishing in the top four come the end of the season. However, this hard work and late winners could all be undone if Pochettino’s side fail to pick up points in February.

Arsenal (H)- Saturday 7th February
First up for Spurs in February, it’s the big one against Arsenal at White Hart Lane. Not only does this carry the huge pressure of a North London derby, but it is also a massive game in the race for a top four finish. Spurs can leapfrog Arsenal with a win, and recently we have heard that Alexis Sanchez will miss out through injury.

Spurs fans will be quietly confident about this latest edition of the North London derby following a well-earned 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium back in September. Some will be oozing with confidence after a New Year’s Day victory over Chelsea.

Liverpool (A)- Tuesday 10th February
Just a few days after, we travel to Liverpool, where another tough ninety minutes of football awaits. If results go against us at the weekend, Liverpool could overtake us with a win at Anfield. Their form at home hasn’t been too bad this term, they have lost just twice, to Aston Villa, and league leaders Chelsea.

However, Spurs will be looking to make it Liverpool’s third home loss in the Premier League this season, and with the way that Mauricio Pochettino has approached away games against the big teams, I wouldn’t be surprised if Spurs were to pick up points at Anfield.

Fiorentina (H)- Thursday 19th February
February isn’t just a key month for Tottenham’s league ambitions, but it is also a chance to make some progress in the Europa League, against Fiorentina, who will be no push overs at all. The first leg is at home, so it is extremely important that Spurs get a positive result to take to Italy in the second leg.

This match marks the start of a mini-fixture pile-up that sees Spurs playing games at the weekend, and in midweek too, and this run extends into March, so Mauricio Pochettino’s men will be looking to get this busy period off to a good start with a win against Fiorentina.

West Ham (H)- Sunday 22nd February
West Ham proved to be our bogey team last season as they destroyed our Capital One Cup hopes, and also did the double over Spurs in the league too last term. However, we did get our own back on the first day of the season, and Eric Dier goal winning it late for Spurs on Pochettino’s first Premier League game.

A game against West Ham is never easy, and they took us apart at White Hart Lane the last time we met at home. The team will have to be on the top of their games to get all three points from this encounter.

Fiorentina (A)- Thursday 26th February
A win could potentially take Spurs through to the next round of the Europa League, and it is the last game of a crucial month for Spurs. The Capital One Cup final is just three days after this, and Mauricio Pochettino is not happy at all. This means that Spurs must go all out to get at least a two-goal lead in the first leg.

This would mean that Pocehttino could leave some of our key players at home to prepare for the vital Capital One Cup final against Chelsea.
