Mauricio Pochettino has expressed his delight at Erik Lamela’s first Premier League goal in a Tottenham shirt, and he is very confident that the club’s record signing can kick on from this, and the only way is up for the Argentine.

Lamela’s goal finally came on Saturday against Burnley at White Hart Lane in front of the Spurs home support, it took him over 1500 minutes to get it, but it was a pearler, cutting inside and curling the ball into the bottom corner. That goal proved to be the winning goal on the afternoon.

It seemed that before the goal, Lamela just couldn’t get the hang of performing in the Premier League, but has performed well in cup competitions, scoring a fantastic Rabona against Asteras Tripolis, another against Tripolis and neat finish against Brighton in the Capital One Cup to mention the three that he has notched up in cups this season.

Pochettino’s faith in his fellow countryman finally seems to be paying off, and the beach coach has spoken very highly of the Argentine, saying that the hard work he has put in is starting to pay off.

“We need to be careful with him because he’s still young,” said Pochettino. “I have explained many times here that he’s still young and always that the first season was difficult for him.

“He had injuries, he has not played too much, but this season he has been more consistent. So far we are happy with him, he has been consistent in training and he has the talent and potential to be a great player.

“We need to understand that in his case, when he arrived, there was a lot of pressure on his shoulders. You need more time to show your best form.

“At the start of this season he trained very hard and with the time and consistency that he showed in those sessions, it’s normal that one day you start to show your best qualities.

“He has a lot of potential. All players need to have confidence and to feel good in order to give their best.”
