Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has said that the Spurs fans are right to expect more from the players after a poor run of Premier League results. The Belgian has also stated why he thinks that Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost to Newcastle last Sunday.

“They have the right to expect things from us as players,”

“We want to do well and they expect us to do well – they have expectations like we do and of course they have to express it in some way.

“I understand they were not happy with a defeat at home to Newcastle. Nor are we.

“We are doing well in the cups, but we need a run of a couple of good games in the league.

“People thought we had started that when we drew against Arsenal and beat Southampton”

“Maybe we were unlucky that the international break came in between, but hopefully we can get back on track now.

“It is difficult to say what is missing. I don’t talk about being unlucky, but we had a good first half against Newcastle last weekend, and we were the better team.

“We lost a bit of belief after the equaliser and maybe a bit of luck. But we are working very hard and we believe in each other. We are getting close to what we want.

Fans will be boosted by the fact that Vertonghen refuses to talk about the side being unlucky on the road to defeat in some games, which shows that the centre-back believes that the actions of the team contribute fully to the final outcome of the match. Recent comments from other players, like Vertonghen has stated that they are becoming a team now in the sense that they all believe in each other and feel that they can rely on other players to push them to their absolute limits and bring the best out of each other, Mauricio Pochettino has contributed to this, like he did at Southampton, since his arrival.
