Tottenham Close In On Free Agent And Former Real Madrid Midfielder

French newspaper L’Equipe claim that Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign former Chelsea and Arsenal midfielder Lassana Diarra on a free transfer.

The holding midfielder is currently without a club after his contract expired at Lokomotiv Moscow. Spurs also face competition to sign Diarra from French club Marseille, who currently top the Ligue 1 table by four points.

The 29 year old had agreed to join Harry Redknapp’s Queens Park Rangers, who currently sit bottom of the Premier League table, in the summer transfer window, and successfully completed a medical ahead of the move, only for the deal to fall through in the final stages.

Other reports say that Diarra will receive a ulcerative weekly pay packet on top of a number of tempting bonuses if he moves back to North London.

However, you would be led to believe that Diarra may not want to join Tottenham due to their massive squad depth and especcially strong depth in the holding midfield positions. Already at the club, Mauricio Pochettino has the likes of Moussa Demebele, Benjamin Stambouli, Etienne Capoue and more recently, Ryan Mason at his disposal.

Tottenham are the closest to sealing a deal for the Frenchman, but do not rule out Diarra returning to his homeland to join Marseille.
